Finding Balance: Changing the To-Do List to Make Kids Thrive
Rebrand Work: A child works in school, on homework and in activities that are organized.
Overemphasise Downtime: Unscheduled time is necessary as mental health, creativity and emotional processing.
Note Down on Burnout: The presence of anxiety, physical problems, and the absence of interest portrays an imbalance.
Model Healthy Habits: Children get to learn how the parents manage to work and live as well and this teaches them how to do the same.
Pay Attention to Sustainability: It is also designed to teach children how to lead sustainable and well-lived life, rather than just survive a busy schedule.
The work-life balance may be regarded as an adult problem, but the children are living through another type of burnout. Children are busy going to school, sporting as well as playing music and doing their homework hence having little time to simply be children any more. As with adults, they need to have a healthy work-rest balance.
The work of a child does not just mean the time he is at school, it also means any activity he has to do and put his energies to use. Their free time, their unorganized, unstructured life, is what they use to daydream, play and be with their family. In cases where the schedule of a child is overloaded, the child might become stressed, anxious, and even have sleeping problems just like their parents. Red flags of an over-scheduled child are fear of the next week, frequent headaches and loss of enjoyment of the things the child previously enjoyed.
It is important to help them to find a balance. The first thing to do is to restrict them to one big extra-curricular activity each season and teach them to make decisions. Provide time with nothing; no conscience or ordering about on the play. Most importantly, act like you would like to see: as you leave your phone behind at dinner and prioritize sleep, you demonstrate to them that life is not a checklist.
Educating children about the work-life balance at a young age will provide them with everything they need to lead a sustainable and successful life, as they will have to know that rest is not laziness, but one of the main keys to success.
